To get to know a place you need to know its history. The Great Lakes has a rich history. The best way to explore this is through the various museums, historical places and buildings spread throughout the region. There are museums in Tuncurry and Bulahdelah which have extensive displays and a vast collection of photographs detailing the regions European history.
A visit to the historic township of Stroud is also a must. The town was planned by the Australian Agricultural Company in 1824 and overlooks the picturesque Stroud Valley. It has over 30 heritage buildings creating an irresistible mix of country charm, modern cafe culture and history. The Stroud Heritage Walk takes visitors through the town to all historic sites and buildings.
