GreyFest, formerly the Grey & Thespian Mardi Gras, is an initiative of the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association Inc. It is organised by the members of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association and a supporting cast of tireless volunteers.
The Festival is held each year in support of NSW Seniors Week to encourage participation in sports, arts, social groups and volunteering. The theme for 2018 is 'Australiana'. 'Grey' recognises the demographics of the area which is highlighted in ABS Census statistics as having the highest median age in NSW, followed by the surrounding areas of Tuncurry and Port Stephens. The area boasts an outstanding arts, crafts and performing arts culture.
The inaugural festival in 2016 grew from humble beginnings, to share a cuppa and cake to mark Senior's Week, into an extravaganza of entertainment and activities. A full program, including golf, performances, dinner/dance, entertainment and markets is presented over 3 fun packed days. It is a celebration of Senior Citizens with a vision to be a substantial annual event of significant regional importance. Its aim is to provide a friendly and inclusive event for the whole community that highlights the contribution of senior citizens in our community, that showcases the facilities, services and activities available to seniors in our community, that promotes intergenerational relationships and to introduce and establish Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens as a destination of distinction for seniors.
Try your luck in the Grey Nomads Cup on Friday. You will also learn more than you ever know about the local area during the evening story time.
Saturday features community markets and live entertainment in the Hawks Nest Park. The aim is to attract all local community groups to come together and showcase the outstanding activities and the variety of groups available in our towns. It is a great opportunity for groups to promote themselves, distribute information and sign up new members. Or why not settle back and enjoy the world class views from the Tea Gardens Hotel while savouring the best Australia has to offer in the finest tradition of a true Aussie BBQ while rocking along to to your favourite tunes by quality local entertainers. After dark, the focus turns to the Hawks Nest Golf Club for the biggest formal bash of the year, the themed Dinner Dance. Dress up in your best 'Australiana' Country themed costume and enjoy a superb two course meal while you dance the night away.
